- PEng, CEng, FICE, FIEB Board Member, BPERB
Lt Col Dr Khondaker Sakil Ahmed is currently working as “Associate Professor” of the Department of Civil Engineering of Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) with the specialization in the area of Civil & Structural engineering. In his distinguished career, Dr Ahmed is recognized by national and international organizations for his outstanding professional achievements. Besides being a board member of BPERB, he is currently a Chartered Civil Engineer (CEng) of the Engineering Council, London, a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), UK, and a fellow of IEB. He is also Honorary “General Secretary’ of ICE Bangladesh Chapter. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), and a Technical Committee member of ASCE-SEI cold-formed section.
At MIST, he is deeply engaged in engineering projects, academics, and research. Dr Ahmed is also the General Secretary of the Center of Advisory and Testing Services (CATS) of the CE Department of MIST (https://ce-cats.mist.ac.bd/), which is dedicated to conducting professional practices of complex engineering projects. He is currently leading 40 in-house professionals who are involved in many engineering projects in Bangladesh. He has been directly involved as team leader/key person of numerous projects. Some worth-mentioning projects are, 16.5 km Expressway at Chittagong for CDA, 2 Basement+14 Storey T-3 & 4 at MIST, 5×15 Storey cleaner’s Building at Gabtoli, 3 Basement+13 Storey Building for HED, 3 Basement +24 storey building for AUB at Agargaon, Bridge and Purbachal 100ft Khal, Radisson Blue Hotel Cox’s Bazar, Mirpur Cantt Shopping Complex, Mohakhali Kitchen market for DNCC etc. Recently, He has also been involved as the principal peer reviewer of Ananta Terraces (4 basements +22 storey 9× residential tower building, 1× retail building and 1× club house), which is the largest luxury residential project in the history of Bangladesh.
He has already conducted at least 20 research projects on different branches of civil engineering. Currently, he is leading 25 25-member research team where he is supervising at least 15 post-graduate students. Dr Ahmed has published more than 100 research articles (with 1300+ citations) in top-tier international journals, book chapters, and international conferences. Some of his research outcomes have achieved significant attention from the engineers and the international research community. Some key research areas are on data-driven shear strength prediction of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams, flexural response of rubberized concrete beams, stainless steel reinforced beams, cold-formed steel, repair and retrofitting of structures, waste glass concrete, steel connections design, structural behavior of spun precast concrete (SPC) piles, etcs. He is one of the pioneering researchers in applying artificial intelligence in structural engineering and construction materials. One of his recent research projects titled “Axial and Shear Behavior of Pretensioned Hollow Spun Precast Concrete (SPC) Pile” gained popularity and received much attention to the international research and engineering community. The research outcome was published in top-tier journals like Engineering Structures, Cleaner Production, Construction and Building Materials, Structures, Building Engineering, Cleaner Materials, and Case studies in construction materials and presented in prestigious conferences like 18th WCEE at Milan.
