Dr. Nur Mohammad Shuman

Dr. Nur Mohammad Shuman’s research is in the field of Geotechnical and Geomatics Engineering, with a particular focus on nature-based solutions and advanced computational modeling. Dr. Shuman held a Ph.D. research position at Jackson State University. His dissertation won an award for Outstanding Dissertation from Jackson State University — a commendable achievement for any student of the prestigious institution. He worked as a member of a prestigious project “Climate Resilient Landslide Repair on Expansive Soil Using Vetiver Grass” which is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). He received a fellowship from the Department of Transportation, Mississippi, for the development of an advanced landslide investigation protocol using geophysical methods in Mississippi. He has expertise in slope stability with a deep understanding of soil behavior under extreme conditions. His recent publications focus on the use of machine learning for settlement prediction of helical piles and the performance of highway slopes under the effects of rainfall.

Currently, Dr. Shuman serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at North South University (NSU), Bangladesh. He traveled to Mali, Africa, in a professional capacity and contributed to various successful engineering projects in the Kidal Super Camp in Mali under the United Nations (UN). He also worked as a remote pilot at JSU and developed a digital 3D map of the JSU campus with UAS (Drone). He also has extensive experience in teaching courses related to soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and computational geotechnics. He is an accredited Intern Engineer (EIT) in the USA and a licensed Professional Remote Pilot by the Federal Aviation Administration. Dr. Shuman’s diverse academic and professional experience, coupled with his innovative research and leadership on significant relevant projects, demonstrates his capacity to successfully lead and execute the current role as a Board member of BPERB.
